They won’t tell you this but if you get going mock two at 38,000 feet and then you pull up with the afterburners on, you can spend a little bit of time in lower earth orbit.
I imagine you can’t even hear your engines anymore at 1500 mph. It gets pretty quiet. I remember seeing an interview with a SR 71 Blackbird pilot talking about how smooth and silent the flight was and the only way he knew he was moving at Mach 3.2 is that the mile counter clicked a number off every 1.6 seconds…

Military aviation has changes over the decades, not that its a bad thing. There used to be a push for pilots with “the right stuff” and if they had it they were given leeway to be pilots (not that it was always a good thing, the b52 pilot who killed his entire crew is a good example)
I think if today a pilot tried 1/10th the stuff Dale Snodgrass did he/she would have their wings ripped off their uniform before getting a swift kick in the ass.

as a kid I remember hearing a loud explosion while running around with a friend in our small Iowa town. we were looking around trying to figure out what it was. Years later, working on avionics in F16s, realized it had been a local Air National Guard unit flying F 100’s supersonic. At that time, most of these pilots had flown close air support missions in Vietnam. Imagine how bored they were flying training sorties in the midwest

I remember back in the early 60’s growing up in Houston TX, I was 5, home with mom, she is doing laundry listening to the radio and then bang!! Hoise shook, well the single pane real non safety glass of our windows rattled, loudly…..mom what that…. Just a sonic boom, it’s the Airforce Jets practicing…..had many sonic boom growing up in Texas, we loved it…….this is when our dad taught us how to reglaze a window….we always knew which windows needed reglazing when the plans came over. We would get the Box planes, jets, everything at that time flew around Houston
Whenever I hear the name F-16 I get chills! This machine gave me so much drama and trauma since I was 10 till I became 30. kept bombing the shit out of us until F35 came along and that was a new type of party!!

Back in the early 60s f4 fantoms would come over our property in eastern Colorado/Wyoming on the Pawnee Prairie area.
They would fly over at mach 2.
Its 1500 miles per hour. A Fantom could go over 1600 miles per hour.
It would make a sonic boom that would just rattle the shit out of you.
That sonic booms would break the windows in the house frequently.
The first thing you’d hear is that enormous Boom. You couldn’t hear them coming.
By the time you figured out which direction the roar was going, that Fantom was disappearing into the horizon.
There weren’t very many people that lived out in that area, but some of the people were whining about it, so by the early 70s, the government outlawed going over the speed of sound.
It was so cool to see a Fantom zip over you 300 feet off the ground.
I really wish it was still legal for them jets to fly over at full speed and low altitude.
It’s a SPECIAL experience.

You can only go mach ll at high altitude. Thin air. At sea level about eight hundred mph is about all.
When these guys are doing flyovers for sports events it’s probably how I feel driving through a neighborhood at 25mph

f16 cant do 1500 mph, mach 2 tops which is 1350 at height, youd have thought a pilot would know that
So, at higher altitudes mach 2 doesn’t create the GPS effect on your body as it would at 4,000 feet?
