Nkosinathi Maphumulo, known as Black Coffee is a South African multi-award winning record producer and DJ. His alias came about while drinking strong black coffee and hey presto a legend was born. Hailing originally from Durban, Black Coffee grew up in Mthatha, Eastern Cape before heading to the Technikon Natal to study jazz and finding his feet in Johannesburg along with two friends with whom he formed his first group called ‘Shana’ which means Simply Hot and Naturally African. Black Coffee was chosen as one of only two South Africans to join the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003. Which jump started his DJ career. Since launching his own record label, Soultisic Music, he has travelled the world racking up fans and awards. Reserved, studiously academic, inventive, imaginative, quiet, enigmatic, shy and bold are but of the few ways in which many across the world perceive and see Black Coffee. No matter how he is seen he remains one of the very few club DJs in the country who genuinely understands the precise function of a music DJ: he does not simply re-mix songs, he re-interprets their previously unimagined musical possibilities, adapting and arranging as each work advises and quietly creating new works that give life. When he debuted with his interpretation of Hugh Masekela’s rambunctious jazz hit Stimela. Black Coffee’s Africa Rising DVD and CD (triple CD) sold double platinum in a space of a month in 2012 and later won Best dance album at the 2013 South African Music Awards – all of this happens shortly after Black Coffee’s Soulistic Music announced a newly signed club DJ – DJ Shimza. 2013 saw him tour Greece, Spain and Amsterdam and also produced a song on Micasa’s Sucasa album.
