I’m fairly certain that part of the reason skinwalkers are just as real as anything to the Navajo is because the word is more like a name given to a person who’s committed a devilish act than it is a name for a legitimate mythological creature.
I remember hearing a story, one describing a W*nd*go, about a man who had left with his family for a reason I cannot remember, likely to go hunting if I had to guess. After leaving, he and his family became lost, and eventually the man killed his family to eat them to stay alive. It wasn’t an act I think he ever wanted to do, but from the forests dark intentions it corrupted his mind into becoming capable of doing such a terrible thing. Eventually, after living off of his family as his food source, he was either found or found his way back to the tribe, and told a story of another tribe hunting him and his family down, or some creature did. He said he lost his family, and only just made it back. But, for reasons I can’t remember, the leader of the tribe didn’t fully believe his story, and allegedly felt a darkness within the man, and had his people investigate his claims. They would eventually find out he has killed and eaten his family, and was sentenced to death. They referred to him as a you know what, and I believe before burning him at the stake they attempted to expel the dark spirit within him.
A lot of this story I think I got wrong tbh. But Ik if I looked it up I might find more details. But it’s too late for me rn. Lemme know what I got wrong or what I left out.
