As much as I hate to say it I believe that honor belongs to the French for the Renault Ft as that is more true to the modern concept of a tank and was designed at roughly the same time although the British fielded theirs first 1916 the French tank had a mobile turret and released 1917

The term “tank” came about from the British intelligence marking all of the parts for the land ship as “water tank” and from there the tongue in cheek term “tank” stuck

The word tank comes from when they were shipping them they needed a plausible name for an item that size that if seen by an observer would not give away what they were. So they used tank like a water storage tank. They were secret until used.

no he didn’t call it a land ship, he called it a tank. he called it a tank because it was a top secret british project, and if the enemy thought they were just building another water tank for the trenches why would they need to dig further.
the name tank was the uk army method of hiding something in plain sight. if it looks harmless on paper (captured messenger pidgins), why should you be worried about the british water tank.
Its not because he could only build ships. Tank was a named used to confuse the enemy and nothing had been done like that before, they didnt know what to call it and “land ship” was kinda obvious so they went with “tank”.
