Now all I would use is coffee or Red Bull or Monster, but all the same I have EXTENSIVE experience in writing fiction. My best sessions are 1-3 hours and on rare occasions I manage even more than that. But the thing is in my experience when I write for 3+ hours non-stop it really messes with my head, it’s almost like it makes me drunk even if I didn’t drink anything but coffee or energy drink.
My speech would become slower as would my thinking, and I could even start to stutter even though I’m not one to stutter. Probably just a me-problem but seriously when I’m spending time writing it is INTENSE. Very few breaks, and if I do stop for a moment it’s probably to figure out a specific word I want to use or maybe a rare instance of looking something up to ensure what I’m writing is accurate.
I typically write at 1800+ words per hour, sometimes over 2500 words in a single hour, and I’m paying attention to visual descriptions and individual characters/personalities/motivations/habits, dialogue (I really enjoy dialogue), continuity, suspension of disbelief, etc. When I type I do my BEST with no half-measures and I have to remember the points that my client wanted me to include in the commission.
So I figure that’s why it affected me so much, maybe even times immediately following a 4-6 hour writing session I even start to stagger. Could be as sober as a priest on Sunday morning yet after a long writing session it seriously can seem like I’m inebriated even if it’s a bit different from being drunk which I have WAY too much experience in too lol How stereotypical, y’know, writers and what not.
