Meg Appelgate – Troubled Teen Industry Survivor Exposes Intermountain Hospital | SRS #296
Meg Appelgate is the Founder and CEO of Unsilenced, a nonprofit organization launched in January 2022 to support past, present, and future victims of institutional child abuse. A survivor of the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI), Meg was abducted from her bed at age 15 and confined in abusive facilities for three and a half years—an experience that drives her mission to expose systemic abuse and fight for reform.
Her 2024 memoir, Becoming UNSILENCED: Surviving the Troubled Teen Industry, chronicles her harrowing journey and transformation into one of the leading national voices demanding change. In 2023, she testified as an expert before the Montana State Senate, helping secure passage of HB 218, landmark legislation increasing oversight and regulation of TTI programs.
Her work continues to empower survivors while pushing for transparency, accountability, and legal reform across the industry.
Alongside her advocacy, Meg serves as Vice President and Managing Director of the Gochnauer Foundation, supporting philanthropic initiatives aligned with justice and healing. She lives with her husband, Ben, and their four children, dedicating her life to ensuring that no child endures what she once did.

Same happened to me, rich Mormon family, got put in lockdown rehab for dipping Copenhagen. My dad is rich and well insured so he’d lie and say I was using drugs, in the end it made me a better Marine but to this day if I could find my jailers I would kill them all joyfully, and they fucking deserve it. Pretty much every single one say 98% of them therapists, counselors, psychiatrists ALL abusive awful demonic people who my father allowed to do this in order to appease my stepmother who to this day is still a despicable person.
34:04 I love this lady so far and I love her honesty The only thing I would say is that I don’t like clinicalizing teen behavior and struggles. But I also don’t like the normalization of people losing their minds as teenagers those are symptoms of problems not “normal”.
Psychiatrique wards for children/teens are kind of same in Canada, qc but the difference is that when they decide your not redeemable they send you to juvenile detention center put you in a isolated and padded room then the let you there and if you do come out without being institutionalized. Your wings has long been torn. The United-nation deems it to be a human rights violation if you are kept in isolation for more than 15 days. How about 3 years of seeing the outside world from the window she described. I grew out of that situation better than most others and I’m actually getting married. This was very hard épisode to listen to.

When they talk about military boarding schools, I did use to work at one, and we are heavily oversight by the state, and by the Bass I worked at one at four Indiana gap and we were oversight by the army in the Air Force and any type of abuse will not only be fired, but also criminally prosecuted
I was at Goodlark Treatment Center in TN, Anasazi Indian Mormon Camp in AZ, as well as Sorenson’s Ranch School I, UT; all had sexual abuse, kidnapping, physical abuse, isolation. Peer to peer rape, starvation, exposure to extreme cold, Goodlark had fights at night by the boys sanctioned by the nighttime staff. Mind you I never saw a drug until I was 23 and out the USMC and the trauma of all that and stress from service and I eventually used drugs, to this day my dad uses my drug use at 23 to justify the trauma I was exposed to as a preteen and young teen, I signed up for USMC at 17. I survived these places and they pushed me towards drugs as opposed to away, I still struggle with anger and healthy coping, the people running them are outright evil people.
Just curious the FBI got involved that fast?
How can you give up on your child and send them away like that? Look, there are exceptional cases. But for the vast majority you are giving up, shame on them…..
My social worker told me she would tell my judge I’ll tell them your house is a mess. But I worked as cleaner for a county Denver justice. Only leverage to grt my kids back and the court case to close. Still don’t have my oldest. 235 years
They really need to fix the foster care system. Start making more non profits to donate clothes or emergency assistant to place children into a safer home, but there needs to be way more background investigations to get rid of preditors who prey on kids because to many weirdos.
I had to stay at a drug addiction rehab that was also called chrysalis, and the shit that place got away with is insane.

I worked in these places for 13 years. All I am going to say about it is this, treatments centers are a broken answer to a broken system. Almost every kid that I have worked with will try to claim that they did not belong there, but when you hear the story of the parent you find that they have tried everything and this is a last resort. Also as far as abuse goes, it does happen in these places, there are staff that do power trip and go extra rough in holds, but the majority of them are good people trying to help while getting paid barely anything and get assaulted regularly. The main abuse I saw was from some of the therapists though that would fully endorse the LGBT agenda and a lot of kids fell prey to this ideology becoming more confused.
As mentioned earlier this is a broken answer to a broken system, a lot of the kids came from dysfunctional families, horrible abuse, mental illness or in some cases they were just spoiled kids that never heard no. These kids were failed in a million different ways, and unfortunately treatment centers are a necessary option, these kids need a place to go that is locked down and they can be watched to keep themselves safe and the people safe that they are around. These places sound horrible until you regularly deal with that part of society that most people like to pretend don’t exist, the extreme cases that make you feel uncomfortable and that sometimes can’t be helped they just need to be locked up so they are not a danger to society.

I would date the “Tip” at 3 to 8 thousand years, not 1 or 2 thousand. It was likely a much longer spear tip to start and reporposed until it was too short and discarded. I’m listening to her story (my childhood was very similar) i went thru the circles, and the boot camp style centers and mental hospitals all because i didn’t know how to deal with life. But the way she views it is totally different than I. I don’t look at it in a bad way. Certain kids need this style of raising. I also can’t understand social ques. I’m 43 and do not have any friends. Thank God I found a good woman who I married. Its crazy how similar our childhood experiences were

I dont see it in her story. seems like alot of whining. stopped her from drinking in college? wow you could focus on the education. maybe misplaced at a harsher facility but some facilities need to be harsher for very tough cases. no sexual abuse. no physical abuse. Shits triggering me. I will say EMDR is a legit therapy. ive been through it and truly work for everyone. talk about the trauma stop watch the fingers go back and forth fast. sometimes they use a light board. If you are a veteran and have issues do this method.

If she was left alone with no mother for 10 days in the hospital as a newborn, that definitely locked in the abandonment and disordered attachment issues from the start. She was set up for failure from the very beginning 😢😢😢😢
