Once the unimaginable power within atoms was discovered the race was on to split the atom. And once that was achieved, the atom bomb was not just possible and not just probable, but it was inevitable. And — this guy, that guy, or some other guy — it didn’t matter; once the bomb was successfully detonated, it was inevitable that its secrets would leak out. Once that happened, the successful production and testing of nuclear weapons by not just one but numerous other nations was just a matter of time. And once that happened, some sort of Cold War was inevitable.
Thus, once that first link in the chain was forged, the Cold War was inevitable. We can only pray that human beings are not so stupid as to start an actual nuclear war.

I’ve worked with a lot of engineers and business men. What I’ve found is that some of the most egotistical business, who do a lot of hard, cannot hold a candle to the mind of an engineer who believes themselves smarter than the rest of the room.

To play devils advocate; if that man _DIDN’T_ give this information to the Soviets and usher in the threat of mutually assured destruction if nuclear weapons were ever utilized? We would be living in a VERY DIFFERENT WORLD.
The butterfly effect is a pretty elementary concept, and the plans to build bombs capable of destroying human life as we know it? Are about as major of an event as there gets; a far cry away from a butterfly landing. And seeing as human life hasn’t (yet) been wiped out and I’m commenting this from my house with plenty of amenities? I’m glad that dude tipped off the Soviets.
If your argument _against_ him committing espionage (which it undeniably is. Whether righteous or not) is a moral one? TLDR; if the only thing that prevented a continued WW2 was the fact that BOTH the USA and the USSR had nuclear warheads? Then that man should be regarded as a savior of human life. Ask yourself if incinerating Soviets is truly any more justifiable than them starving or being overworked until death? We 100% would have kept using those weapons if there hadn’t been a threat of retaliation. So if you are going to claim path A leads to more death you need to give an accounting for all of the deaths caused by path B. And the resulting damage to planetary livability.
