Used to bartend for Mike at a private club. He’s a nice guy.
Used to build cell towers. 930 ft is the highest I’ve ever climbed. I’ve changed light bulbs in the 11 states. The FAA wants those things changed within 11 days

I’ve jumped of the ramp of a C-130, but looking down off that made my balls twing!
I wish I didn’t have little baby balls when it comes to highs but I just can’t do it. It’s taken years for me to feel somewhat comfortable on a two story roof I couldn’t handle being that high without a solid structure.

I was roofing and I was tied off incorrectly along with another guy during a fast downpour while putting down slate. He was beside me, slipped and fell off the roof but thankfully there was a knot at the end of his rope that eventually caught him but it still screwed him up. If it were me that fell, I would have died. Talk about sphincter slamming shut.

Not to be this guy but there is no reason you should EVER not be tied off at heights. If you need to unclip from the safety line then first you tie off with a lanyard to something else and then retie onto the safety line after.
I climbed it back in the 2000s it’s quite fun.
I had a similar situation back when I worked on cell towers. I had to unclip to get over a platform. Once I was on top, I started to work on the mount without realizing I didn’t hook back on. The sphincter definitely goes air tight. That didn’t compare to being on top of the Sears tower without harnesses.

I loved yesterday’s episode. And I love Mike Rowe. The only thing I don’t get is why is he an advocate for blue collar. He was a pony show for tv shows, yet no real blue collar history grinding day to day. He takes field trips then sits on pedestal saying “these guys just need to get off their asses and claim what’s theirs. But it’s simply not realistic. I’ve been iron working/welding for ten years. And the wages he talked about are for traveling, family free, hard labor jobs. I have no problem with hard labor work it’s all I’ve ever done. But you can’t preach how important family is, and how it’s dwindling in society, and leads to a real problem for the whole country down the road. While also saying, “get off your ass and work. I’m 32 “kind of” newly married. Financially responsible. Don’t go out. But for some reason can’t buy a house (colorado). The odds are still very stacked against the normal person. I’m financially comfortable. But home ownership is looking a lot more like 40 at this point. It’s extremely frustrating. The economy, the bankers, shit the whole government is stacked against us. I’m not trying to sound like a lib tard, but I did everything I was told to do growing up and feel so betrayed.

Same thing happens one a triple drilling rig with a top drive when you are standing on the monkey board. Driller feeling funny and kicks the bells out far enough to pick the end of the board up. Make ya heart do unnatural things.

The unclipped moment happens. Whenever I was teaching, I’d warn new guys about it. Id talk then through the climb, get them complacent, and tell them to move around a little. Without fail they’d reach out to open their only safety, and I’d slap the ever living shit out of their hands.
