Swan Lake Comes Alive at the Teatro at Montecasino
Presented by Cape Ballet Africa in collaboration with Global Star Events, Swan Lake brings one of classical ballet’s greatest works to the Teatro at Montecasino with a production that respects the timeless beauty of the original while presenting it with scale, polish and theatrical spectacle.
Under the choreography and stage direction of Elena Glurjidze, the familiar story of Prince Siegfried, Odette and the sinister Von Rothbart unfolds with grace and remarkable visual precision.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Prince Siegfried encounters Odette, a princess transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. By day she must live as a swan, returning to human form only at night.
The spell can only be broken by a vow of true love.

But knowing the story and watching Swan Lake performed live are two very different things.

There is an almost hypnotic quality to watching the corps de ballet move together.
Individually, each dancer is executing technically demanding choreography.
Collectively, however, they become something else entirely.
They become the lake.
They become the swans.
They become part of the world surrounding Odette.
Odette and Odile — Two Sides of One Extraordinary Role
At the heart of Swan Lake is one of classical ballet’s most demanding challenges: the contrasting characters of Odette and Odile.

Despite the grandeur of the production, Swan Lake is ultimately an intimate story.

The entire production impressed me.

The dancers provide the emotion and physical brilliance.
The choreography gives that brilliance structure.
Tchaikovsky provides one of the greatest ballet scores ever composed.
The costumes provide elegance.

And the Teatro provides the canvas upon which everything comes together.
