I began learning about Hinduism when I took an interest in learning Sanskrit, just because I thought it was a cool, ancient language. With degrees in cultural anthropology and philosophy, it was right up my alley. I initially became entranced by the language, the extremely ancient temples and their technological and historical motifs, but I really became hooked by the philosophy. I was learning and studying everything- the Vedas, the Gita, Upanishads, Puranas, and Advaita Vedanta was just so nice and reassuring for my unmoored soul at the time, which had long carried unresolved questions about the nature of God and man that my Protestant upbringing did not account for. I’ve always been a spiritually sensitive person, and I quickly noticed that what I was learning (and somewhat accidentally conjuring, given that I was literally learning Sanskrit by speaking its religious texts aloud) was NOT just philosophy, but was actually super powerful and I began seeing angry and hostile entities during meditation (or occasionally even while taking a shower) asking me why the heck I kept bothering them if I’m not actually seeking anything from them. Needless to say, I started to get a little freaked out with all of that showing up, but reasoned that it could just be my imagination, until the night terrors and shadow people started showing up in my house and began scaring my kids (God forgive me, but we’ve exorcized the place). This, along with the slow feeling that I was starting to lose my mind, was when I knew that all that crap had to stop. At that point, I was meditating daily, often for up to 4-6 hours at a time. I was also studying/practicing Zen Buddhism (Plum Village), along with the Tao, and at that point, both my mental health and my marriage began to truly fall apart. It was only at that sudden internal collapse that I somehow found my way to Eastern Orthodoxy (which yes, surprisingly DID answer all the issues I’d previously had with the church/doctrine/etc), and I can honestly say that I haven’t looked back since. All that is to simply say, be careful guys, especially you philosophical truth seekers like myself, Vedanta (Hinduism) can be a tricky one and you absolutely can and most likely will end up with lots of clinger level 5 dark stragglers that you’ll need to appropriately cleanse/dismiss, even if you aren’t looking to convert to a new religion, lol.
