I thought about this a little. I think the reason he wrote it is because we just saw Jules threatening those kids, and then only seem minorly annoyed when someone gets killed right next to him, so its the quickest and scariest way to establish the power dynamic between Jules and Jimmy. When Jules back down from Jimmy after we’ve seen he’ll go off the rails for a lot less, we instinctually understand that a even killer like Jules wouldn’t dare talk back to Jimmy, and it makes him terrifying. Also note Jules goes to Jimmy for help. We never learn exactly who Jimmy is,, but we know he’s powerul and connected, and nothing like that is ever explicitly stated.
As to why Quentin decided to play that role, he probably just wanted to say the n word in a huge movie because he could get away with it if it was written well
What was socially acceptable back then and 30 plus years later..today isnt even close. Settle on something interesting to giggle about once and a while.

I think its just weird because we know he is a guy that in the past has picked his roles not randomly but because of personal preference. He is a foot fetishist, and its not a coincidence that he cast himself in a role where he licks a womans foot.
Therefore it wouldnt be out of character for him to cast himself as a guy who says the n word not randomly but because he wanted to say it.

Myself and a few friends watched Titanic when first was released in theaters. Right before Leo DiCaprio’s character Jack slipped beneath the water everyone could hear him say the N word. Obviously there were only whyte people in the theater watching the film. After the scene we all looked around with the same thought “Leo what the heck.”
